Kama Sutra

There is very rare information known about the writer Vatsyayana or the exact date he wrote the Kama Sutra (Sanskrit for “Aphorisms of Love”). It has been mostly assumed, though, that it was written sometime between the first and sixth centuries A.D. Others believed that it was written during, or shortly before, the Gupta period (320-540 A.D.), which has also been called the Classical Age of India.

While some parts of it deals with human sexual behaviour, the book focuses more on some Indian philosophies that follow the “four main goals of life”. It also contains lists on how to live a life that is developed holistically.

Although the Kama Sutra of Vatsyayana, which was written in ancient India, contains historical and anthropological data about ancient India, it was more known for its contribution for adult entertainment.

This contribution lies in a text document, which is actually just a small snippet of the entire Kama Sutra, of the so-called “sexual positions list”. This piece of document is now regarded as a guide, or a “how to” manual, on how to achieve to sexual enjoyment and other sensual pleasures.

It is still a wonder that the positions dated thousands of years ago are still applied now.

Man-on-top position

The man-on-top position has been widely known to be the most conventional throughout the entire populace, and the Kama Sutra was the first who describe this position in detail.

“Indrani draws up both her knees
until they nuzzle the curves of her breasts;
her feet find her lover’s armpits.
Small girls love this posture,
but becoming a goddess takes a lot of practice.

and digs in her heels besides her hips,
while you caress her breasts:
this is Utphallaka (The Flower in Bloom).”

This excerpt actually described the Indrani position, which is actually one of the sitting positions.

These are just some of the sex positions the book has popularized over time. Years passed and variations of these positions included in the book had been developed and exercised by many.

But with the coming of ages, the image of the Kama Sutra does not entail the same spirituality as it was originally anymore. Now, the word “Kama Sutra” seems to be directly related to “adult, unadulterated entertainment.”
